Setting up the Backup Radar Connector
Prerequisites
Before setting up the connector, ensure you have:
- A Backup Radar account with Administrator access
- API access enabled in Backup Radar
- Access to Paratira with permissions to add connectors
Technical Audience
Experienced IT administrators or service desk managers responsible for managing Backup Radar accounts and API integrations, with administrator access to Backup Radar and Paratira.
Granting Access to Backup Radar
Backup Radar uses API keys for authentication. You will generate an API key from Backup Radar and enter it in Paratira to establish the connection.
Step 1: Access the Connector Setup in Paratira
- Log in to your Paratira account
- Navigate to Settings in the left menu
- Expand the menu and select Connectors
- Click the Add a new connector button
Step 2: Choose the Backup Radar Connector
- In the "Add new connector" wizard, go to the By technology tab
- Locate and click on the Backup Radar tile
- Choose either One to One or One to Many depending on your setup
- Click Next to proceed
Step 3: Generate the API Key in Backup Radar
- Log in to your Backup Radar account as an Administrator
- Navigate to Account Settings then click API Keys
- Click Generate New API Key
- Copy the generated API key securely
Step 4: Enter API Key and Details in Paratira
- Enter a name for the connector, e.g. Backup Radar Connector
- Paste the Backup Radar API key into the API Key field
- Select the customer(s) to associate with this connector
- Click Add
Step 5: Test Connection
- After adding details, click Test Connection
- Paratira will validate API access and permissions
- This may take a few minutes to complete
- Once successful, click Next to continue
Step 6: Assigning Customers
- After testing the connection, click Customer Mapping
- Click Add New Mapping
- In this step we will associate the Company Name from Backup Radar with the Customer in Paratira
- Important: Ensure that all jobs in Backup Radar for each customer are using a unique identifier for the Company Name. For example, if CustomerA has 10 backup jobs ensure that the Company Name entered in Backup Radar is the same for all of the jobs.
- Enter the Company Name in the Enter Connector Tenant ID input box and then select the Customer in Paratira (DFP) from the drop-down menu to associate the customer between the systems.
- Click Add
Step 6: Complete Setup
- Review the connector summary
- Click Finish to complete setup
- The new Backup Radar connector will appear in your connectors list
- Initial data collection will start automatically
Data Collection Details
The Backup Radar connector collects the following information:
- Backup job statuses
- Device inventory and backup targets
- Backup software versions
- Scheduled backup tasks and alerts
- Backup success and failure metrics
Authentication Details
Backup Radar uses API key authentication:
- The API key is securely stored by Paratira
- No manual token refresh is required
- Access is read-only to Backup Radar data
Troubleshooting
Access Issues
Error: "Invalid API Key"
Solution: Verify the API key is correct and active in Backup Radar
Error: "Access Denied"
Solution: Ensure the API key has sufficient permissions and your Backup Radar account has Administrator role
Post-Connection Problems
Error: "No data retrieved"
Solution: Confirm that backups and devices exist in Backup Radar and API access is enabled
Error: "Partial data available"
Solution: Some data may require Backup Radar account feature upgrades
Best Practices
- Use dedicated API keys with limited scope for integration
- Regularly rotate API keys to maintain security
- Monitor Backup Radar account for any permission changes
- Periodically verify connector status and data freshness in Paratira
